The Stadium of Light is a football stadium located in Sunderland and is the home stadium of Sunderland A.F.C. The Stadium of Light was the largest new club stadium built in England since 1923 when it opened in 1997 at a cost of £23 million. The capacity at the Stadium of Light is currently 49,000 but Sunderland have planning permission for the extension of the South Stand to take the overall capacity to about 55500. Also, the stadiums second tier will eventually be extended round the East Stand pending improvements in local infrastructure taking the capacity to 69,500.
